The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, provides inpatient and outpatient consultation, evaluation and state-of-the-art treatment for a wide range of acute and chronic lung diseases.

MEET OUR TEAM

Dr. Balk went to the University of Missouri at Kansas City for Medical School and received his BA in Biology in 1976 and the MD degree in 1978.  He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and went to the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences for Fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

 

Dr. Balk is the J. Bailey Carter, MD Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College and the Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.  He is also the Director of Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and the medical director of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Rush Oak Park Hospital.

Dr. Balk’s major clinical and research interest have been focused on understanding the pathogenesis and defining management strategies for patients with severe sepsis, septic shock, the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

 Dr. Balk has authored over 100 original manuscripts and book chapters.  He has received several honors including; election into the AOA Medical Honor Society, the Sirridge Award For Clinical Excellence, the Alice Sach Award for Dedicated Service and Superior Individual Effort in the Area of Patient Care, The Alfred Soffer Research Award From the American College of Chest Physicians, and the E. Grey Dimond Take Wing Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School.  Dr. Balk has received several teaching awards from the department of internal medicine housestaff during his tenure at Rush University Medical Center.  .  Dr. Balk has been listed in the Castle Connolly How to find the Best Doctors in America since 1999.

 

 

Dr. Chen went to Rush Medical College and also completed her residency and fellowship at Rush University Medical Center.  She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.

Dr. Gurka went to University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago for Medical School.  He completed his residency and fellowship at University of Illinois Medical Center

Dr. Gurka's clinical expertise is critical care medicine.  Dr. Gurka research interest includes: sepsis and multiple organ failure. ​

Dr. Hanif-Mirza went to Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan for Medical School.  She completed her residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center and her fellowship at Rush University Medical Center.

Dr. Hanif-Mirza's specialties are Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Hanif-Mirza's clinical expertise are in Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Hanif-Mirza's research interest include:

Dr. Hanif-Mirza is fluent in Urdu.

Dr. Kaplan went to University of Connecticut School of Medicine for Medical School and also completed his residency and fellowship at University of Connecticut Health Center.

Dr. Tran went to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for Medical School.  She completed her residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and completed her fellowship at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals.

Dr. Tran is board certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine.  Her clinical expertise include:

Dr. Tucker went to University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences for Medical School.  She completed her residency at Rush University Medical Center and completed her fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University.

Dr. Tucker's is board certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine.  Her clinical expertise include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease.

 

Dr. Yoder went to University of Illinois College of medicine at Chicago for Medical School.  He completed his residency also at University of Illinois Medical Center and completed his fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Yoder's specialties and is board certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Yoder's clinical expertise include:

Innovative therapies for respiratory failure and asthma in the Intensive care units include the following:

Physicians in the division also evaluate patients for sleep apnea and other sleep-related disorders, as well as cardiopulmonary disorders.
